Black Velvet was born in December 2011 and opened for business in the first week of January 2012. Now we are comprised of a unique retail outlet, wholesale coffee roasting, and an online store selling coffee and related products. We aim to source, roast, and blend the most beautiful origins available. Our goal is to share these discoveries with the home barista and cafe owner alike.
Black Velvet is the brainchild of Darren and Jackie Silverman. We often get asked how we ended up in the coffee business and we suppose, like most people, the answer is that we’re not really sure. “One thing led to another” is true to a degree, but it’s hardly the full answer.
The full answer is much longer. The full answer involves thirty years of experience in the hospitality industry, and a career as a professional dancer. The full answer involves being asked to speak Italian without knowing a word of it, and coordinating over two-hundred schoolchildren. The full answer is the life story of a couple trying their best to leverage their skills and follow their passions.
The full answer is a love story.

We eat, drink, live, and breathe coffee. We think about all of the important things - how to store our coffee, how to adjust our grinder - when, and why. We wonder whether our coffee machines should be loaned or owned, how to know if a cafe is serious about their coffee, and what the perfect temperature is to steam milk to (65-70 degrees, thanks). We think about these things because we believe coffee is important.
A cup of coffee can bring people together. It excites and energises the mind. It sparks connections and conversations. How many businesses, artistic projects, loving relationships, and more have bloomed over a simple mug of perfectly brewed cafe espresso? How many long days has the simple bean gotten the world through? How much has been accomplished on the back of this Black Velvet?
Melbourne cafes are renowned across the world. We are proud to be part of a culture that celebrates and sings the praises of such a glorious product. The story of Black Velvet Coffee is a love story, but it’s not just the love story of Darren and Jackie. It’s the love story of Darren, Jackie, and their favourite morning beverage.
