What's The Difference Between the Original Pearl Model S
Just as fast and accurate as the original Pearl model S, but with many unique features and improvements based on suggestions from the original model
Improvements
- Brewguide Mode: This mode, which gives the user the option of directly interacting and downloading recipes from the Brewguide app, is exclusive to the Pearl Model S and Pearl Model S 2022. Due to the detailed display and hardware, the scales have the ability to show recipes and prompt the user through steps. On the original, this ability is accessed through long pressing the tare button. On the 2022 version, Brewguide is now a mode that can be toggled through like other modes.
- Flowrate Practise Mode: This mode is exclusive to the original Pearl Model S.
- Countdown Timer Mode: This mode is exclusive to the Pearl Model S 2022. The mode is a customizable timer that can be personalized with 3 adjustable presets and over 30 melodious tones.
- Weight and time notification in sound or voice: The sound and voice feature is exclusive to the Pearl Model S 2022. Designed for those who need auditory assistance or would like to hear notifications. This feature can be turned off. The time notification interval is 10 seconds and the weight interval is 20 g.
- Melody: On the Pearl S 2022, we've included a hidden secret mode. When you press and hold the Power and Tare button for 5 seconds, the 30+ ringtone music created will play consecutively in the background. These tones can be adjusted for presets in the Countdown Timer Mode in the Ringtone setting.
- Adjustable Volume: Exclusive to the Pearl Model S 2022, the volume setting can be adjusted as well as switched to silent.
- Charging Port: The Pearl Model S has a mini USB charging port and the Pearl Model S 2022 has a USB-C charging port.
- Bluetooth: The original has Bluetooth 4.0 and the 2022 version has 5.0.
Original Pearl S Indicators
- Battery charge/Charge error: the orange indicator on the upper left turns on when the battery is charging and turns off when the battery is fully charged. The indicator starts flashing or does not appear when the USB cable is not working.
- Tare operation: The orange indicator on the lower left turns on when the Tare button is pressed.
- Ounce indicator: The green indicator on the upper right turns on when the weight is measured in ounces.
- Espresso Mode indicator: The green indicator on the lower right turns on when in Espresso Mode.
2022 Pearl S Indicators
- Battery Charge / Low Battery Indicator: This indicator turns on when the battery is charging and turns off once the battery is fully charged. The indicator starts flashing when the battery power is low as a reminder to charge the scale.
- Bluetooth Connection Indicator / Button Pressed: The orange indicator on the lower left turns on when the Tare button is pressed.
- Weighing in Ounces: The green indicator on the upper right turns on when the weight is measured in ounces.
- Weight Stable Indicator: If Weight Stable Indicator setting is on, the green indicator on the lower right turns on when
the weight is stable.

Black Velvet was born in December 2011 and opened for business in the first week of January 2012. Now we are comprised of a unique retail outlet, wholesale coffee roasting, and an online store selling coffee and related products. We aim to source, roast, and blend the most beautiful origins available. Our goal is to share these discoveries with the home barista and cafe owner alike.
Black Velvet is the brainchild of Darren and Jackie Silverman. We often get asked how we ended up in the coffee business and we suppose, like most people, the answer is that we’re not really sure. “One thing led to another” is true to a degree, but it’s hardly the full answer.
The full answer is much longer. The full answer involves thirty years of experience in the hospitality industry, and a career as a professional dancer. The full answer involves being asked to speak Italian without knowing a word of it, and coordinating over two-hundred schoolchildren. The full answer is the life story of a couple trying their best to leverage their skills and follow their passions.
The full answer is a love story.
But you’re not here for that, for the sweet and sappy stuff. You’re here for the coffee - the deliciously bitter kind. You’re here for the single-origin stuff, from Ipanema to Ethiopia. You’re here for Honduran Liquid Ambar and Colombian Tolima Excelso.You’re here for the authentic flavour you’ve come to expect from the coffee-obsessed minds of Melbournites. And trust us, you’ve come to the right place.
We eat, drink, live, and breathe coffee. We think about all of the important things - how to store our coffee, how to adjust our grinder - when, and why. We wonder whether our coffee machines should be loaned or owned, how to know if a cafe is serious about their coffee, and what the perfect temperature is to steam milk to (65-70 degrees, thanks). We think about these things because we believe coffee is important.
A cup of coffee can bring people together. It excites and energises the mind. It sparks connections and conversations. How many businesses, artistic projects, loving relationships, and more have bloomed over a simple mug of perfectly brewed cafe espresso? How many long days has the simple bean gotten the world through? How much has been accomplished on the back of this Black Velvet?
Melbourne cafes are renowned across the world. We are proud to be part of a culture that celebrates and sings the praises of such a glorious product.
